I've had trouble finding pants that are long enough for me for as long as I can remember. Despite being "only" 176 cm, I have very long legs - something that resulted in me often walking around feeling out of place as a teenager. Trouser legs that ended up way too high, a feeling of never quite fitting in.
When the fashion for lace at the bottom of pants came along in high school, I was almost ridiculously happy - finally I could hide the fact that my pants were too short and at the same time feel properly dressed.
"Ankle length must be perfect for you, right?" someone might think. Unfortunately not. On me, ankle length looks like high water - and that's not really the look I'm going for.
When I was 13, my parents bought a small apartment in a charming village on the French Riviera. Since then, I have spent every summer there, and now I travel there with my husband and our children. It is our shared sanctuary, our paradise.
We love the French way of life - how everyday life is allowed to be enjoyable, how small moments are valued. The morning walk to the bakery to buy fresh baguettes. Stopping by the butcher and greengrocer for dinner.
The question of when to eat the avocado - now or tonight - to get it perfectly ripe. That way of taking the day as it comes, of treating yourself without waiting for the weekend.
My daughter Emilia has inherited my physique, and thus my pants problems. She puts it best herself: "It is sometimes possible to find a pair of pants long enough - but the supply is minimal and runs out immediately. And it's almost impossible to find a model that is actually modern and fits well in my particular height."
One summer, when we were walking together in our small village, she said: "Why isn't there just one brand that makes nice pants that are long enough?" My husband and I looked at each other - and the idea was born.
We had long talked about wanting to create something together. Something that wasn't just another brand, but something that actually solves a concrete problem. We started sketching, dreaming and planning - but quickly realized we needed to strengthen the team. So we teamed up with a talented art director, a photographer and a sharp IT specialist.
The name? It was my husband who came up with it - Gentaille. A word of his own, inspired by the French: 'Généreuse' (generous) and 'Taille' (size). Generous size in length, simply put.
We are just at the beginning of our journey. We're launching with a carefully curated selection of classic basics - pants that are timeless, wearable and, most importantly, long enough. Our ambition is to become the obvious choice for women looking for pants that actually reach all the way down.
And who knows - maybe more garments will come later. After all, it's not just the legs that can cause problems when you're tall. And yes, the blonde girl with the angel curls - that's Emilia.
